Wates, main contractors on the Life and Mind Building project, plan to close the road outside the building over the coming weekend so that the last of the tower cranes used on the project can be safely removed from the site.
The closure will begin just after midnight on Friday 26 April, and will be lifted just before midnight on Monday 29 April at the latest. Over this period, St Cross Road will be closed to motor vehicles outside the building, although access will remain for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists.
Vehicle access to the end of South Parks Road will still be possible except during the period of complete closure mentioned below, but severe delays are likely.
The exception to the above is from 11am to 2pm on Friday 26 April, during which both South Parks Road and St Cross Road will be completely closed to all road users outside the site.
The University regrets the inconvenience this will cause to neighbours. Wates will do everything they can to complete the operation by the evening of Sunday 28 April so the road can reopen on Monday. However, this will depend on weather and other factors – this article will be updated with further guidance that evening.
During the closure, a temporary diversion along Mansfield Road will maintain vehicle access between Longwall Street and South Parks Road. This will include a one-way system along Jowett Walk and the end of Holywell Street. Heavy traffic is expected along this route at busy times.
Plans are in place to allow access by emergency services in the event this is necessary; marshals will be present to control traffic at key locations, and the diversion route will be clearly signed.
